Hi, I'm Andrew and I’m just a simple 19 year old guy and zoology student that posts random factoids about obscure animals and general animal science/zoology/biology stuff so if you like animals this is the place for you, if you only like cute animals this is not the place for you… Also I can ID any animals you might need identified (just submit them to me).

Disclamer: none of the pictures are mine unless stated

Queen Carola’s Parotia (Parotia carolae)

Also known as Queen Carola’s Six-wired Bird of Paradise, Queen Carola’s parotia is a species of bird of paradise endemic to the mid-mountain forests of central New Guinea. Queen Carola’s parotias feed mostly on fruits and arthropods and are sexually dimorphic with males sporting elaborate feathers for mating displays. These displays involve the male elongating its neck feathers forming a ‘skirt’ and making small movements to attract females.

Its name commemorates Queen Carola of Basa, the wife of King Albert of Saxony who had the King of Saxony bird of paradise (P.alberti)  named after him.
