Hi, I'm Andrew and I’m just a simple zoology student and crustacean researcher from Ohio. This blog centers around animal IDs so feel free to send me any unknown species (and its location) that you have and I will take my best shot at IDing it! I also occasionally post random zoology/animal factoid things.

Whiskered Auklet
(Aethia pygmaea)
is another seabird of the family Alcidae, although unlike the Razorbill they are found exclusively on the Aleutian and Commander Islands of the Northern Pacific. They are alot smaller (as most auklets are) making them the 2nd smallest alcid in the world (the least auklet being the smallest). This species is poorly studied and not much is known about them, from what has been studied it is known that they don’t migrate, but stay on a breeding island all year long, and like other alcids they only lay one egg in small colonies together. Their whiskers serve to help the birds sense their way out of their nests at night.
